Concept2 Rower Model D

My first experience using a Concept2 rowing machine (or "erg") was when I walked-on to the lightweight crew team during college. The team recruited endurance athletes, and a cross-country runner in high school, I thought that I would give rowing a try.

After receiving some instruction on proper rowing form and technique, I performed a max effort 500 meter split for evaluation. I can honestly say that even after years of running, I had never felt so exhausted in my life. I literally fell off the rowing machine when I was done, completely spent. I didn't stay on the crew team (competitive rowing just wasn't my cup of tea), but from that day on, I knew the power of the erg.

My gym has several Concept2 Model D rowers, and I use them regularly. It is extremely easy to use, and the LED display is easily configurable to track your performance over a given distance or length of time. The adjustable damper allows you to select your preferred level of resistance, and the seat on a well-maintained machine slides back and forth easily. I prefer a damper setting of 4, since I believe it replicates the "on the water" feel of an actual boat.

A workout on a Concept2 rower is truly a total body workout. It requires the use of your legs, back, and arms in a continuous and natural movement. Short distance max effort workouts can result in lactic acid build-up and soreness, but lower intensity sessions will still give your body a thorough workout.

I recommend rowing workouts and the Concept2 rower to anyone who is interested in an actual challenging workout session. This is NOT for the type of person who wants to read a magazine or watch TV while walking briskly on a treadmill. Rowing takes much more energy than walking on a treadmill or elliptical trainer, even at low intensities. But in my opinion, there is no better cardio exercise method on the planet!
